I love winter when there's snow. We get outside! We play! It beats the winter blahs better than anything else. We dress for it.
Well dressed for winter play should include the following: (note that I'm usually cold)
Snug fitting base layer. (Undershirt & tights)
Turtleneck & yoga pants
Thin polar fleece sweater
Warm ski socks.
Warm boots, good mittens, warm hat, scarf.
Good coat & snow pants
I can't say enough about good snow gear. If you are warm, you can outlast your kids. I see many parents waiting on the tobogganing hill in less than idea winter wear! They look cold and miserable and I'm sure their kids weren't out as long as they'd wanted to be.
